Welcome to the Maclean Cubs Homepage |

1st Frankby Greasby-Maclean Cub Pack Science and Astronomy Nights
At the end of last term my dad (who is a science teacher) came along to cubs to help with the science and astronomy badges. When he first came he brought his telescopes and binoculars. He taught us how to recognise some different star constellations (like Orion, the Plough and Cassiopeia) and then we went outside to try and find them in the night sky. He also gave us two challenges: (1) To see if we could see two very close stars in the Plough, (if we could our eyesight was good enough to be in the Emperor of Persia’s bodyguard), and (2) To see if we could see the nebula cloud in Orion. When we came back inside the scout hut we made a map of the solar system. This can be viewed on the Maclean cub pack notice board. On my dad’s second visit we did some science. We all made our own wormeries. To make a wormery you need to add layers of soil and sand in a plastic bottle. Finally you pop in some worms and some leaves for them to eat! My dad then demonstrated the Van de Graaf generator which made our hair stand on end when we touched it. He also showed us “the Screaming Jelly Baby”. For this he put a jelly baby into a tube of chemicals and heated it. Suddenly smoke started pouring out, sparks started flying and a weird sound started up. This was the jelly baby “screaming”! On my dad’s final visit to cubs we made slime. Using glue and borax.
